Namaste. We are the Marine National Park in Jamnagar, Gujarat.

And if you look around you will see a number of non-living things in this environment.

    00:24

So we have this area full of water, we have rocks, we have sand underneath, we have air around us and we have this beautiful sunshine. Now all these factors that are known as abiotic factors support a number of living organisms also known as biotic factors.

    00:40

So for instance this rock is covered with seaweeds. In this water we have fishes, we have crabs, we have octopus.

Now ecology is the study of all of these, the abiotic portions, the biotic portions

    00:56

and their interactions. So for instance ecology tells us what determines the distribution of organisms.

So for instance why do we find the seaweed at this particular location and not some other location?

    01:12

It also tells us about the abundance of different organisms. So for instance how many fishes will be supported in this ocean, or in a certain patch of this ocean?

If we are doing aquaculture, how many prawns can we cultivate? Now once you have this knowledge of ecology we can make use of it for our own purposes.

    01:29

So whether we are managing a natural resource for conservation purposes or for tourism, so for instance in the case of this Marine National Park, this is being managed for conservation and also for education of people also for tourism. So when we are managing a natural resource ecology plays a very crucial role and in this

    01:48

course we are going to learn all about it.

    02:10

    Thank you.
