in this lesson we're going to talk about how to convert feet to feet and inches so let's begin with part a we have 4.5 feet

00:15

how can we convert that to feet and inches now what you want to do is break this into two parts 4.5 feet is 4 feet Plus 0.5 feet thus we have 4.5

00:32

now the decimal portion the 0.5 we want to convert that to inches so we can write the conversion factor here to convert feet to inches you need to multiply by 12.

00:48

there's 12 inches in a foot so I set up the conversion in such a way that the unit feet will cancel so it's 0.5 times 12. that gives us 6 inches

01:03

so we can write this as four feet and replace this with six inches so that's what 4.5 feet is equivalent to it's four feet and six inches

01:26

try this example Part B convert 6.25 feet to feet and inches feel free to pause the video

01:42

so let's break it up into two parts this is six feet Plus 0.25 feet so let's convert this part the decimal point 0.25 to inches

02:00

we're going to follow the exact same process we're simply going to multiply it by 12. 0.25 times 12

02:15

that is equal to a nice whole number which is 3. so 0.25 feet is 3 inches so our original problem 6.25 feet that's equivalent to six feet

02:31

and three inches we can also write it this way six feet and three inches

02:47

now for the sake of practice go ahead and try Parts C and D feel free to take a minute and work on those two examples

03:06

so let's start with part C we have 8.417 fee let's break that to let's break it into two parts so we have eight feet plus 0.417 feet

03:23

now let's take the decimal part the 0.417 feet and let's convert it to inches so just like before there's 12 inches in

03:39

a foot and let's multiply those two numbers 0.417 times 12 this is 5.004 but we can say it's approximately

03:57

5 inches so our final answer is approximately eight feet and five inches

04:12

now let's do the same for Part D so we have 9.583 feet let's convert that

04:34

let's focus on the decimal portion we're going to multiply this by 12.

04:58

503 times 12 that's 6.996 I'm going to round that to 7. this is approximately 7 inches so we could say

05:14

9.583 feet is approximately equal to 9 feet and seven inches

05:33

it's not exactly but it's very very close so now you know how to convert from feet to feet and inches thanks for watching
